ROLE: Freelance E-Learning Developer
CLIENT: Educational nonprofit that partners with K-12 educators currently serving 440,000 students in diverse communities across the country (Freelance client, shared with permission)
TARGET AUDIENCE: Teachers, School Leaders, & Curriculum Specialists
TOOLS USED: Canvas LMS, HTML, Canvas Studio, CidiLabs DesignPLUS, Atomic Tools, Canva
YEAR: 2022
The school district that this course was designed for was in its first year of implementing the curriculum, and early user and coach feedback had revealed knowledge gaps. Based on a needs analysis, clear objectives were set and a content plan was outlined. My team (of fellow freelance instructional designers) divvied up topics.
To make the course engaging and accessible, I used Canvas plug-ins, HTML, CidiLabs DesignPLUS tools, and Canva, creating interactive elements like polls, discussions, accordion tabs, and videos. I focused on designing interactive, learner-centered content using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, while adhering to the module template for consistency. The basic module structure is as follows:
The Prepare page acquaints learners with the new content by connecting it with prior knowledge and previews required materials.
The Orient page introduces the guiding question, learning targets, and expectations for the module.
The Learn page delivers essential content using multimedia and interactive tables for choice-driven exploration.
The Plan page encourages reflective practice and collaborative planning.
The Debrief page prompts learners to reflect on their learning journey and self-assess progress.
See how I worked within this template to develop Module 5 and convey the essential content in way that would engage adult learners.
The final product is an 8-module, self-paced, asynchronous eLearning course that provides focused, tailored support to these users.
This project was my first with this client, and I am proud of the polished, cohesive final product we delivered. It provided a seamless, user-centered experience that allowed learners to tailor their engagement. I’ve since completed three more projects with this client, each benefiting from lessons learned and our team’s continuous improvement practices.
